Frequently Asked Questions
And Other Information
Annual Maintenance Recommendations
- Winterize at end of season – at a minimum, must do at the end of each season to prevent freezing of components and maintain system warranty.
- Spring Start-up – recommended to give your system an annual tune up and optimize watering performance for the upcoming season.
- Service – as needed, for repairs, new yard projects, updates, etc.
Winterization
We automatically add our new customers to our start up and winterization list. When we are scheduling in your area, we will contact you with the date about a week in advance. You don’t need to contact our office each season, we will contact you when your property has been scheduled.
- Winterizations are completed between mid-September and the end of October each season.
- You may opt out of our lists at any time. Please note that your system warranty is void if we do not winterize your system.
- Instructions
- Pump system: turn your controller to the off position and turn the power to your pump off. Access to your controller is helpful, but not always required for winterization.
- Backflow system: turn off the interior water supply valve and turn your controller off. We typically tag your water shut off valve with a bright green tag to help you identify the irrigation water supply.
Start-ups
Process: like the winterization process, if you are on our start-up list, when we are scheduling in your area, we will contact you with the date about a week in advance.
- Pump system: Please have the power to your pump on, and your pump and controller accessible to our technician.
- Backflow system: Please turn the water supply to your irrigation system on and have your controller accessible to our technician.
When should I start watering?
Typically, watering is required in the months of June, July and August when rainfall is less than 1” per week. Start-ups are completed prior to that time so your system is ready to water when you are.
Why should I have you start up my system, can’t we just turn the water on?
Through the professional start up process, we energize your irrigation system, check all components for any winter damage or shifting, check head adjustment for optimal watering performance, test rain sensor and program your irrigation controller. This process ensures the best start for your unique turf and landscape needs, allows us to inspect for any winter damage or leaks, and ensures the most efficient use of water resources.
Warranty
The complete system warranty period is one year from the date of installation. A detailed Warranty statement is included with your new installation packet.
Rain Sensor
Having a rain sensor with your irrigation system helps to conserve water resources. Rain sensors can be wired or wireless and connect or sync with your controller.
Q: It’s raining, why is my system still running?
A: It’s possible that we have not received enough rain for the rain sensor to signal the controller to stop running. Rain sensors can be adjusted to detect 1⁄4 inch, 1⁄2 inch or more of rain. It can also take time for the dowel (if applicable) to expand to signal the system to stop watering. Over time the sensor may need service, a new battery, resync to the controller. Call us if you’d like to schedule service to resolve any issues.
Controller - The irrigation controller tells the system when and how long to run.
Q: How often should I adjust my controller programming?
A: We recommend adjusting your programming on average three times a year – spring, summer, and late summer. The spring and fall watering requirements are not as great as the peak of summer watering needs. The amount of daylight, sun, temperatures, and wind all impact your turf and landscape needs. New seeding or planting may also require a new temporary watering schedule.
With our standard Hunter Pro-C controllers, we have included a quick reference card for programming and a manual. With our more advanced Hunter Hydrawise Controllers, the smart controllers work off local airport utility apps, and adjust your watering for you. We also have the capability to remotely support your programming change needs and troubleshoot controller errors you may encounter.
